Two Kinds of Freedom

Today we celebrate freedom. Flags wave. Families gather. Parades roll down Main Street. Fireworks light up the sky. We remember the gift of living in a land where freedom has been cherished, defended, and passed on.
That kind of freedom is precious.
But there is an even deeper freedom.
Paul says, “For freedom Christ has set us free.” He is not talking first about a country. He is talking about a Savior. He is not talking about fireworks in the sky. He is talking about chains on the soul.
Jesus came to set us free from sin, shame, fear, guilt, pride, and the heavy burden of trying to save ourselves.
That is the freedom every heart needs.
A person can live in a free nation and still be a prisoner inside. Prisoner to regret. Prisoner to anger. Prisoner to addiction. Prisoner to people’s approval. Prisoner to the voice that says, “You are not enough.” Prisoner to the lie that says, “God could never love you now.”
But Jesus breaks chains no army can break.
At the cross, He took our sin. At the empty tomb, He broke the power of death. By His grace, He opens the prison door and says, “Come out. You are mine.”
So Paul tells us, “Stand fast.”
Stand fast when shame tries to drag you back.
Stand fast when fear tells you to hide.
Stand fast when old habits call your name.
Stand fast when you are tempted to earn what Jesus has already given.
Christ has set you free.
Not partly free. Not almost free. Not free only on your best days. Free.
So today, as we thank God for the blessings of this nation, let us also thank Him for the greater freedom of the gospel.
The flag reminds us of liberty. The cross reminds us of grace.
And because of Jesus, the deepest part of us can say, “I am not a slave anymore. I belong to Christ. I am free.” Stand fast, dear child of God. Christ has set you free.
Have a great 4th!
