Made for Purpose
Most of us spend a good part of life asking, “What do I want to do?” What career do I want? Where do I want to live? What kind of life do I want? Even our prayers can become a spiritual version of a wish list: “Lord, here is my plan. Please sign at the bottom.” Isaiah starts somewhere very different. God says He formed us. God made us. And God made us for His purpose.
That changes the question. Instead of asking, “What do I want God to do with my life?” we begin asking, “God, what did You make my life for?” That can be a dangerous prayer, because God’s plans are often bigger than ours. We naturally make our world small. We care about our family, our community, our church, our problems, and our plans. Those things matter. But God keeps widening the circle.
Jesus said, “God so loved the world.” Not just my world. The world. When Christ takes hold of us, He begins stretching our hearts. People we once ignored begin to matter. People who are different from us begin to matter. The lonely, poor, forgotten, difficult, and far away begin to matter. Why? Because they matter to God.
Sometimes that means God has to rearrange a few things. We may have plans He never approved. We may be chasing goals He never gave us. We may even ask God to bless a road He is trying to get us off. God is not being cruel when He changes our direction. He is reminding us why we were made.
You were not created merely to build a comfortable life. You were created to know God, love Him, serve Him, and carry His love into the world. That is not a small calling. And it is not reserved for pastors or missionaries. Wherever you are today, you are standing in part of God’s mission field.
So perhaps the best prayer is not, “God, help me accomplish my plans.” Perhaps it is this: “Lord, I am Yours. Show me what You made me for.”
