Mark 14:41
41 "He came a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough! The hour has come; the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners"
Three days before God raised Jesus from the dead, after the celebration of the Passover the disciples are asleep at the wheel. Not once. Not twice. Three times.
Jesus steps back into the circle of drooping heads and heavy eyes and says words that feel like a bell in the night: “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough! The hour has come; the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners” (Mark 14:41).
That word—hour—is big. It means the moment has arrived. No more practice. No more delays. No more “later.” This is the sharp edge of the story. This is where love gets tested.
And notice what Jesus does not say.
He doesn’t say, “The hour has come; I have been abandoned.” (Though He is.)
He doesn’t say, “The hour has come; I have been treated unfairly.” (Though He is.)
He doesn’t say, “The hour has come; I must protect myself.”
He says, “The hour has come.” And he faces it with his eyes wide open. Jesus is not confused. He is not trapped. He is not running. He is walking straight into the hands of sinners—on purpose.
That is what makes this verse so holy. The disciples are weak. Their fatigue win the battle. Their eyelids drop faster than their commitment. They love Jesus… but they cannot stay awake.
And here is the heart of the story for the disciples and all humanity. When the hour comes for them/us to stand, they/us will fall. When the hour comes for Him to suffer, He will stand.
And that’s the gospel: in our sleepiness, Jesus stays awake. In our weakness, Jesus is strong. In our betrayal, Jesus is faithful.
So, if you feel like you’ve failed Jesus. Hear this: He already knew you would. In the end, we are more like the disciples than we are like Jesus. But he still went forward. The hour has come. And in that hour, Jesus chose you.
