Day 40 (April 4th)
Day 40 (April 4th)

Matthew 27:62-66

62 The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember what that impostor said while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ 64 Therefore command the tomb to be made secure until the third day; otherwise, his disciples may go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has been raised from the dead,’ and the last deception would be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers; go, make it as secure as you can.” 66 So they went with the guard and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone.

One day before God raised Jesus from the dead, the tragedy became a comedy. It’s almost funny if it weren’t so sad. Jesus is dead. His body is in the tomb. The stone is rolled in place. The Sabbath is beginning. You would think everyone could finally breathe.

But not the Chief Priests and the Pharisees. They march to Pilate with more nervous that a cat in a rocking chair factory, “We remember what that impostor said… ‘After three days I will rise again’” (Matthew 27:63). They remember His promise better than many of His friends do and they have a plan. Lock it down. “Make the tomb secure,” they say, “until the third day” (Matthew 27:64). Put guards on it. Seal the stone. Make it as tight as human hands can make it (Matthew 27:65–66). Here is Saturday's theme: control.

When people are afraid, they reach for power. When people feel threatened, they tighten their grip. When people don’t want God to surprise them, they start sealing stones. We do the same thing, just in smaller ways. We seal our hearts with “I’m fine.” We guard our pain with jokes and lock away grief. But here’s the truth. You can seal a tomb, but they can’t seal the truth. A wax seal cannot stop a living Savior. A stone cannot hold the Author of life. A guard cannot block the hand of God. They tried to make the grave “secure.” Yet their security plan is really a confession: they are scared Jesus might be right.

And He is. This is what I love about this story. Jesus doesn’t need our permission to keep His promises. Jesus doesn’t ask the council to approve the resurrection. He doesn’t check with Pilate to see if it ok’d by the government. He doesn’t pause because the stone has been sealed.

So if you’re living in a “sealed” day—when everything feels closed, quiet, and final—take heart. Saturday is not the end. The stone is not the boss. The seal is not the last word. People can guard a tomb, but they cannot guard God. And the risen Jesus is coming.
