Look Up Again

Psalm 19:1

“The heavens are telling the glory of God,

and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.”

Lift up your eyes and look at the sky. Not just a quick glance. Really look. Isaiah will pick up the same thought as the Psalmist when he says, “Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things” (Isaiah 40:26). In other words, don’t stare at the small stuff so long that you forget the Someone who made the big stuff.

That was Israel’s trouble. Their imagination got thin. Not because they couldn’t daydream, but because they kept looking at the wrong things. They stared at idols—things they could control, carry, and polish. And when you keep your eyes on something small, your picture of God shrinks. Your heart starts living in a tiny room. Then hardship comes, and there’s no space to breathe.

So God, through Isaiah, gives a simple command: look up.

Creation is not God, but it points to God. The wind that pushes against your face. The sun that warms the frozen ground. The stars don’t need your help to keep shining. These are like little sermons with no words. They whisper, “He is here. He is bigger than you. He is still holding everything.”

But here’s the honest question: what have you been looking at too long? Maybe it’s yourself—your worries, your image, your mistakes. Maybe it’s your work—your goals, your pressure, your need to prove something. Maybe it’s your “spiritual resume”—your past experiences, your failures, your victories. Any of these can become an idol if they fill your whole view.

And when your imagination of God is starved, prayer feels flat. You say words, but your heart can’t see Him. So you endure life like it’s night, even when the sun is up.

Today, do one brave thing: turn your face away from the idol and lift your eyes to God. Step outside if you can. Look at the sky. Breathe deep. And pray something simple: “Lord, make my picture of You big again.”

Because the God who names the stars can surely hold your day.

Have a great week! -Pastor Corey
