Lost

Have you ever felt lost?
Have you ever felt lost?

“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins[a] and loses one. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? 9And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”  Luke 15:1-10

One minister writes, “When I was a young minister, a funeral director asked me to hold a graveside service for a homeless man with no family or friends. The funeral was to be at a cemetery way out in the country. It was a new cemetery, and this man was the first to be laid to rest there.

I was not familiar with the area and became lost. As a typical man, I did not ask for directions. I finally found the cemetery about an hour late. The backhoe was there, and the crew was eating their lunch. The hearse was nowhere to be seen.

I apologized to the workers for being late. As I looked into the open grave, I saw the vault lid already in place. I told the workers I would not keep them long but that this was the proper thing to do. The workers, still eating their lunch, gathered around the opening.

I was young and enthusiastic and poured out my heart and soul as I preached. The workers joined in with “Praise the Lord,” “Amen,” and “Glory!” When the service ended, I prayed and walked to my car. As I opened the door, I heard one of the workers say, “I never saw anything like that before, and I’ve been putting in septic systems for twenty years.”

Part of the human condition is that we get lost from time to time. We lose our way. Life as we know it is stolen away from us, the horizon changes, our azimuth is off-center, and we couldn’t find true north if it had flashing lights.

Have you ever felt that the sun wouldn’t shine again, even though the sun was shining? Did anxiety ever get the best of you? How about depression? Regardless of your nemesis, I can tell you the result of it all is a feeling of being lost.

If this is true for you, rest assured that God is neither asleep nor slumbering. Christ is alive and searching every moment of every day. His voice is everywhere:  in creation, in the still small voice, in the minister’s message, in the friend’s firm embrace! Everywhere!

Seek God, and He will find you.

Have a great week!
