Let us not neglect our church meetings, as some people do, but encourage and warn each other, especially now that the day of his coming back again is drawing near. (Hebrews 10:25)
The church holds more solutions than problems. However, it isn’t always easy to be a church member. The unfortunate reality is that sometimes the church shines in all its glory, and other times, NOT SO MUCH. I have had a ringside seat for watching the church at work, and sometimes it has been a celebration of joy; other times, it is a descent into despair. But, with that said, I still think the church holds great promise. Here is why.
1. We, the church, have a noble task. In Eph. 4:15, our mission is to become “the mature body of him who is the head, Christ.” I cannot think of anything the world needs more than Christ. Christ brings healing where there is injury and reconciliation where there is discord. We need that now more than ever. The church is many things, but it is undoubtedly Christ’s education center.
2. The church makes the world a better place. St. Paul writes in Phil. 4:8, “Brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things.” The world follows a stringent principle, “If it bleeds, it leads.” The level of negativity in the world is consuming us all. Be counter-cultural! Be the hero the world needs! Be a leader! Whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy – let those be the center of your conversation and life. You can be the reformation the world needs. If you choose this path, you must refuel through companionship with like-minded people.
3. As the church, we can be a part of something bigger than ourselves. Collectively, we can make an impact. We are more than the sum of our parts and infinitely better together. In all of its errors and foibles, the church is still the tactical operation center for advancing the kingdom of God on earth. And you have a role to play in this effort.
The church, at its best, is hope, love, and peace for the world. You and I, at our best, are the same, and we can be better together.
