The Peace Jesus Gives

Some peace comes because we do not know what is coming. The doctor has not called yet. The bills have not arrived yet. The storm is still somewhere over the horizon. We are peaceful because, for the moment, we do not know enough to be afraid.
But that is not the peace Jesus gives.
Jesus spoke these words on the night before the cross. He knew exactly what was coming. He knew about Judas. He knew about the soldiers. He knew about the nails, the cross, and the tomb. And still Jesus had peace.
That is the remarkable thing. Jesus was not peaceful because life was easy. He was peaceful because He trusted His Father. And He says, “My peace I give you.”
Notice what He does not say. He does not say, “I will remove everything that troubles you.” He does not promise that the diagnosis will change, the relationship will heal, or tomorrow will suddenly become easy. He promises something better. He promises His presence in the middle of it.
We often try to worry our way toward peace. We replay the problem. We imagine every possible ending. We turn it over and over in our minds, hoping that enough thinking will finally make us feel safe. It never does.
Worry is like sitting in a rocking chair. You can work hard all day and still go nowhere.
Jesus offers another way. Look at Him.
Bring Him the thing keeping you awake. Tell Him about the fear you have not told anyone else. Lay the problem before Him and remember who is sitting beside you.
Jesus is not confused. Jesus is not frightened. Jesus is not wondering what He will do next. The storm that feels enormous to you is not enormous to Him.
So when your heart begins to race, and your mind starts running toward tomorrow, return to Jesus. You may not understand what God is doing. You may not know how the story will end.
But you know who holds you.
And sometimes peace is not having all the answers.
Sometimes peace is hearing Jesus whisper again:
“Do not let your hearts be troubled.”
