Swords, Clubs, and Darkness

“Have you come out with swords and clubs as though I were a rebel? 53 When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour and the power of darkness!” - Luke 22:52b-53

Jesus was not shocked by swords, clubs, and darkness.

When the soldiers came with torches and weapons, Jesus did not say, “How could people do this?” He knew what was in the human heart. He knew how fear could turn into anger. He knew how sin can dress itself up as goodness. He knew how friends can sleep, crowds can turn, and leaders can lie.

Jesus was not fooled by sin.

But some people are fooled into a false sense of security. Some people pretend sin is not real. They say, “People are basically good. We just need more education, more kindness, more time.” Then sin shows up. A betrayal. A cruel word. A selfish choice. A hidden habit. A wound from someone we trusted. And because they did not expect darkness, they do not know what to do with it.

Other people go the other way. They see sin everywhere and trust no one. They become hard, suspicious, and cold.

Jesus was neither naïve nor bitter.

He saw sin clearly, and He loved people deeply. That is the way of wisdom. We do not have to pretend people are better than they are. We also do not have to give up on them. Sin is real, but grace is real too. Darkness has an hour, but Jesus has eternity.

God does not call us to innocence; rather, purity. There is a difference. Purity has seen the mud and still chooses clean hands. Purity knows the world is broken and still follows Jesus. Purity does not say, “Nothing bad can happen.” It says, “Even here, Christ is Lord.”

So be wise. Do not be surprised by sin in others. Do not be surprised by sin in yourself. Bring it into the light. Name it. Confess it. Resist it.

And trust Jesus.

He walked straight into the hour of darkness, not because darkness was strong, but because His love was stronger.
