Enough

“Thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes” (Matthew 11:25, KJV).
Most of us would like God to explain the whole plan before we take the first step. Where are we going? How long will it take? Will there be parking? We call it being careful. Sometimes it is simply our way of staying in charge. And staying in charge is something I do quite well.
Jesus speaks about a different way to live. He thanks His Father for revealing His truth to little children. A child’s willingness to receive is something grown-ups can lose. We get used to having answers. We become less comfortable admitting we need help.
So, we come to God with our arms full of opinions and wonder why it is so hard to receive what He gives.
Sometimes it isn't that we don't understand God; it is simply that we are not willing to trust his guidance. We know we need to apologize. We are waiting for the other person to go first. We know someone needs our help. We are hoping someone less busy will notice. We know we should let go of that grudge. But we have spent years polishing our reasons for keeping it.
So we ask for more guidance when really what we needed was more guts. And the apology remains unspoken.
Jesus invites us to trust Him enough to act on what He has already said. For example, “Love your enemies” is clear enough. Unfortunately, obedience leaves us without control over the outcome. We can offer forgiveness without receiving an apology. We can tell the truth without being understood. So, we drag our feet in passive disobedience.
But we can trust the heart of the One asking us to follow.
Look at His cross. Jesus gave Himself for us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8). His love came before we understood, before we obeyed, before we had anything to offer. That same love holds us as we learn to follow Him.
What is the small thing you already know He is asking of you? You may not need another answer today. You may need to make the call.
Have a great week!
